History

West End deli was established in 2008 by Justin & Christine Peters however the Carr St location has had a rich history prior to this. ….

West End Deli - HistoryWith the help of one of our regular customers Marie Slyth, we have been able to trace the shop back to the 1930’s when it was Melrose’s Cash and Carry. Then in the 1940’s the Wignall’s bought the shop which remained as a general store of sorts until the 1960’s where an Italian family took over. At this stage a small butchers shop adjoined the general store. From the late 60’s and throughout the 70’s the Martino family took over the shop and they worked tirelessly with their whole family to run the business. During this time the butchers shop was replaced by a hairdressing salon which only lasted a couple of years. From 1977 onwards the Siamos family took over and opened what is fondly remembered by lots of our current customers as a Greek deli that they visited as a child. In more recent times the corner shop on Carr St has been a take-away food store as well as a very well patronised Cafe Saga.

West End Deli As you can see from this diverse history, the site on Carr St has always been an integral part of the community. Carr St itself has a well documented history with a number of its current occupants having lived on the street for well over fifty years. It is the nostalgia that surrounds 95 Carr St that lead Justin and Christine to fall in love with the venue and like many families before decide to throw their whole hearts into building a business that the local community would also fall in love with.
